I know that I will be doing navy for my bridesmaids dresses, but other than that I am having a tough time deciding. The wedding is at 7 o’clock, so long or short could be appropriate. However, it is going to be June in Atlanta so long may be hot as hell. And with long, the only real option is chiffon, and I’m not sure how crazy I am about that. I do like the way short look and I think there are far more options. And they tend to be less expensive which is a huge plus. {Because no…. no one will ever, ever wear it again I’m sure. I am not going down that road where the bride acts like it is going to be worn again because it’s so beautiful. Hmmmm doubtful.}
SO, what do you think? Long vs. Short? What Material?
Also, what do you think is a fair price for dresses?
If you know any pretty navy dresses, feel free to send my way!
I realized that I still have all of my pins on my “secret” wedding board, so I’ll work on transferring a bunch over to a new board I just created last night called Wedding + Honeymoon.
obviously the second “secret boards” began on pinterest, I quit pinning things to my “party” board that could have been just party related and not wedding related. You know you judged the people with the full blown wedding boards that were public too.
some navy pinspiration:
Although my girls wore long dresses, the short ones are more likely to get wear out of them after the wedding I feel like. The average price seems to be around $300 or less. And love those patterned dresses in the middle shot!
I'm wearing that J.Crew one shoulder in a wedding in August (in coral). I love it!
My girls wore long chiffon Amsale dresses and they looked fantastic! They were such fantastic quality and looked amazing on all the girls. I highly recommend them if you go long!
The Amsale are a little more pricey than the J.Crew (or other shorter dresses) and I know that people say you'll never wear it again, but 3 of my 6 girls have already worn theirs again. 2 wore it long and one had it cut short. I definitely think the norm for long dresses is under $300 and under $200/$250 for short.
LulaKate has some great styles and fabrics, but those are $300 for short dresses.
I loved the navy bridesmaids dress I wore in March. Simone Carvalli style 00265C-96048 $295.80 group discount (I think the discount is for 6 or more). We got to pick between 2 styles and the other style was cute too (and cheaper!) Simone Carvalli style 00265C-96032 $205.70 with group discount. I would totally wear my dress again…just haven't had a chance to yet! I would go short since it's a June wedding. I was running around all day getting stuff for the bride and so was only cold once (for a March wedding in SF that's impressive!) All your choices above are really pretty. Good luck deciding!
I had navy bridesmaids dresses, long and chiffon by bill levkoff. I was able to find a good option for under $200 for each girl (plus alterations/shipping etc). I love a long dress especially for an evening wedding (ours was at 6pm) I think it just helps to set the tone of formality. Will your boys be in tux or suits? I highly suggest Dessy Group/Alfred Sung for non-chiffon long options!
I would say short because then the maids may get use out of them! I am going with something that is becoming more popular but very unconventional and letting my maids go to Forever 21 and pick something in the peach/blush/coral catagory. Yes, I may be crazy.

I vote short. And honestly navy is a good color – so if you do pick the right dress there is a chance of them wearing them again. I had all my girls pick their own dresses but my scheme was neutrals (blush, champagne, tan) so it was easier to have them look cohesive. I think up to 200.00 is okay to ask them to spend. If you fall in love with something over 200 I would pay the difference.
Love the navy and all your choices! They all look super flattering! I had a 5:30 wedding in March in Charleston. I had short, though wished they were long when it was all said and done. I think $300 or less is a fair price.
Short in navy is so cute. I guess it depends on what time of day the wedding is and if it is formal. If you did long, maybe a chiffon? I had a friend who just did short navy dresses from DVF. They were lace and STUNNING!! Anywho, I think a good price is around $300. xoxo PS did you watch the Jeff Lewis marathon on Bravo last night???
I love short bridesmaid dress #4! Seems like it would be flattering on almost any figure! Also I've paid $400 for a bridesmaid dress before, but luckily it happened to be amazing, so I've worn it a few more times! 🙂
I think short would be perfect! I really like the J. Crew option. You definitely could wear that more than just this one time.
Xoxo,
Christine
We did navy and long in July in Charlotte and I loved them!! Some of the girls actually have worn them again. Here's a sneak peak…

First, you Bravo expert….did you know that Tamara's Bridesmaid dresses for her upcoming wedding show are from David's Bridal? Next, I know you won't listen to me on this one….I didn't do it, but I wish I just chose the color and let everyone pick their own style of dress. Google some images of this ans see if it appeals to you. It is so hard to find one cut that looks good on everyone. This will also ensure that they might wear it again.
Hi Taylor! I really love the J Crew Arabelle in navy! My sister used to be a wedding stylist at J Crew and purchased that exact dress to wear as a guest at a wedding, so it's totally feasible that it could be worn again!
As far as leopard accessories, definitely check out the Clare Vivier foldover leopard clutch! For flats, RED Valentino makes an adorable leopard print pair!
Atlanta in June?! Go with the short for sure! Love the navy!!
First, I completely agree that "will they wear it again" should not be part of the equation! I have 8 bridesmaid dresses hanging in my closet that were worn, yep, just once.
I just got married (in Chicago!) and had my maids in Amsale, one-shoulder long gowns for a 6pm ceremony – they were really flattering and I personally loved the formality of long dresses. They are a bit pricey, so I had my maids each pay $200 and I paid the difference. When I've been a bridesmaid, I always felt much prettier in the long gowns. (If the weather is hot, it's not going to matter that much whether the dress is short or long.)
First of all, love the blog redesign! So pretty and preppy. Secondly, I love the navy bridesmaids dresses! I kinda love the short one on the far right, so pretty!
navy is such a pretty bridesmaid color, love it!!
We got married the last weekend in May at 6:30 in Raleigh, NC. Hello humidity. My girls wore long Amsale dresses in French blue (navy in Amsale is almost black). They said they were very comfortable – they could have lied to me :). The groomsmen wore white dinner jackets and it looked great. Being someone who is a little more traditional, we did long because 6pm and after tends to lend itself more to a black tie affair. Love your blog!!
Hey Taylor! Congrats (belated) on your engagement! I loved all the dresses, and I actually wore the short, Alfred Sung one (option 4) in a wedding a few weeks ago and it was really flattering. It's also a little dressier than other options which I really liked!
I love short dress #4. I picked out a color for my wedding then took my bridesmaids out and let them try on a bunch of different dresses and decide on a mutual favorite. It worked out well and everyone was happy. Love the navy…it will flatter everyone!

Navy is such a great color for bridesmaids! Personally, I love short bridesmaids dresses if you're not doing a super formal wedding because they would be great for dancing (and wearing again after the wedding). The second and third options in that lineup are my favorite…which shouldn't be surprising because I pretty much love everything from J Crew 🙂

I love the dresses in the last picture. And navy is a great bridesmaids color. My vote is for short dresses. I had a short dress for a June wedding and it was still SO very hot. The wedding was inside but we took pictures outside.
HEY GORGEOUS…loving the new blog design– you are stunning in that red dress at the top of your page!
I really like the one shoulder navy opion, I actually think it might be something I WOULD wear again! It would be gorgeous with a statement necklace (bridesmaid gift, perhaps?)!
I had navy dresses for my wedding which was held in June. The color looks good on everyone and is very chic and crisp in the pictures.
So my friend did a super formal wedding with long navy gowns. They were gorgeous… on everyone but me. When I tried it on in the store I had another friend with me, who, upon seeing me, said immediately "it's not you it's the dress." Even with that in mind, the photos from that wedding STILL inspired me to go on a diet and I'm not a big girl to begin with.
So, I sort of have a phobia of long navy dresses and would say short. But, my real reason for commenting is this:
Long or short, whatever length you choose, I highly encourage you let the girl pick the cut that flatters them best. Unless you're secretly trying to tell one of them to diet.
Moving on, I agree TOTALLY on the "will they wear it again thing." I have a couple of super flattering bridesmaid dresses I still haven't worn again .
OK so i'm super late to the party, but LOVE navy as a wedding color. so classy. secondly, i totally wanted to do long chiffon dresses, but they ran $100-200 more than the short options and that just wouldn't work for my bridesmaids. i love jcrew's options. they always have so many blues, you could even mix n match blue hues. i'm sure you've seen this, but i'm dying over the new patterns http://www.jcrew.com/wedding/Wedding_Features/WeddingPartiesPreview.jsp
It's summer day, i'd like to choose the short dresses for my girls. Navy blue is a great color of cheap bridesmaids dresses in uk. Thanks for sharing!
I love navy bridesmaid dresses – used them in my wedding last year 🙂
I went with short and chiffon (we got married in South Carolina…hot, hot, hot!) Chiffon was great because I had bridesmaids of different sizes and to me, it looked great on everyone. (My sister-in-law went with taffeta and mother-in-law complained ALL day about how every wrinkle showed in pictures. Satin can have the same effect.)
I chose Bill Levkoff (because they looked like JCrew dresses!)at a fraction of the cost. The girls could try them on at a local bridal boutique and then ordered them off of http://www.bestbridalprices.com (legit site, I promise!) to save money. Dresses ran between $100-$150 for my girls. Ironically enough, two of them ended up wearing them again when a another bride picked the same style!
I'm in a wedding next year and the bride just picked JCrew, short and chiffon. She did it so we can "wear it again" and honestly, I think I would! We could pick our own style. A lot of the JCrew bridesmaid dresses are on sale now, so I got a $250 dress for $130 and thought the price was more than fair.
…pick what you love. I was so hung up on NOT being a bridezilla, I ended up regretting not being more controlling. I let my girls pick their own jewelry, shoes and hairstyles and wished I hadn't. It's YOUR day so make decisions to keep you happy – you'll never please everyone!
I had a hard time finding short navy dresses that I liked for an evening wedding where the grooms wore tuxes. Ended up with silk DuPont from Jenny yoo! The chicago store is great! Also considered lula Kate but couldn't try them on.
My bridesmaids wore #4!!!! I think they liked them… I at least loved them and wish I got one too. And they came in dupioni silk just like my dress! Navy is fabulous and perfect for a June ATL wedding! xo
Wow, these blue dresses are so beautiful, especially the lace styles. I also love pink bridesmaid dresses!
I'm getting married in October and my bridesmaids are wearing long navy starlight sateen dresses by Swoon. I was against the chiffon also and loved how soft these were (without losing shape). They were $235 from Bella Bridesmaid.
i just got married last month and my bridesmaids wore different styles of those midnight blue alfred sung dresses you showcased in your short dress section. since each girl did a different style that would flatter them the most, they all looked absolutely fabulous! the dresses look really expensive and nice but really weren't too terribly pricey. one bridesmaid got hers at an actual wedding store so hers was upwards of 150 probably nearing 200 but the others all bought theirs online from random sites, some more sketchy than others haha, but all of them came and were in perfect condition. if you shop around online, they could be as low as 120 or 140. i have pictures if you'd like to see just let me know! these dresses are so cute i don't think you would be disappointed at all!
My sister bought me a wedding dress from Vera Wang Wedding collection. Ohhh, the dress is amazingly beautiful and I cannot wait to wear it.
I am currently at the bridesmaid dress buying stage and with 2 here in the UK and 2 in NZ it is proving to be a tricky task!
