For today’s wellness post I wanted to talk about shaving my face.
It got lots of commentary and discussion going on instastories.
The at home dermaplaning.
Yes. The lady face shave.
And not the shave with shaving cream that sketchy JD from Southern Charm offers his good ‘ole boys at The Barber & The Shave. This one is done in the safety of your own bathroom, where you can sip a cool glass of Pinot Grigio if you like (instead of that damn Gentry Bourbon he’s always unsuccessfully pushing).
Why do men get to age like a fine wine while we age like milk? Perhaps the shave (and the constant exfoliation) is something helping them out.
I did a post here about my experience with dermaplaning, where an aesthetician shaves your face, and I loved my experience.
Sadly, I have not gone back yet since I didn’t want to cough up the $100-ish expense, but I also had not been ballsy enough to attempt the “at-home” shave. So….. I apologize to friends and strangers alike if my blonde mustache had been visible lately. I’m already married so, I mean, I don’t really care all that much? Right? NO!
My husband doesn’t need to look at that I’m far too young to let myself go like that!
So, I had heard about using the at home razors to do regular face shaves at home, and I had held out because
1) I was hoping I’d just splurge and do it at the office again and
2) I was scared sheyiteless of shaving my own face.
It took enough nerve the first time to have a professional do it! The beauty bloggers + people to trust about this kind of stuff (aka, not me) had talked about these Tinkle razors but it wasn’t until a girlfriend told me that she uses them herself that I ordered them. (see note below about the Tinkle Razors*) And then….. I waited another month or so after ordering them before doing it.
BUT I have been trying to do something each Sunday as a Hashtag SelfCareSunday and the razors had been sitting on my counter for weeks waiting for me to quit pretending people can’t see blonde hair just do it, so Sunday I did!
I did a google search refresher to make sure I would be shaving in the right direction and after showering and washing my face I went for it. (Ironically, the video is Michelle Money of Bachelor fam came up. I took it as a sign…..and also forgot how annoying her voice is…… )
A few short minutes later I was fuzz free!
If you have normal or dry skin it will make your skin feel very dry so make sure you apply a moisturizer or a moisturizing oil of your choice on afterwords, because it definitely needs it afterwards!
OH. and for nose hairs (yep…. those unfortunately are NOT blonde peach fun like my mustache) I do NOT use these, I use one of the battery operated facial hair trimmer things. And love them. YIKES it can get….. unfeminine….. up in there. One circle motion in each one and you’re good to go.
I posted the image of the Tinkle’s on my instagram story and got tons of comments from readers that they use them and love them too! So I will definitely say it seems to be a hit all around.
And like I mentioned in my dermaplaning post, it didn’t make hair grow back darker or thicker.
*Warning : make sure you pay attention when buying the Tinkle’s off of Amazon. There are apparently a lot of fakes out there now! So make sure to read the reviews and see if people have commented that it’s a different product than they received in the past!
My co-worker has gorgeous skin (she is younger and has that beautiful darker skin and far better genes, so I know those all play a much bigger role) but I asked if she uses anything and she told me about Maracuja Oil. Oils are such an easy thing to slather on in mere seconds so I am always game for adding something simple to my skincare routine.
I found this brand of 100% pure organic maracuja oil and for around $10 it was on it’s way to be in less than 48 hours. (Now, I don’t know how legit the organic and cold pressed of this is, because I don’t know how well that is regulated, but it’s pure maracujan oil, it’s cheap, and it had killer reviews. So that’s good enough for me!!!)
This is what I smeared all over my skin after the face shave – but use anything that is super moisturizing that you know your skin likes!!
There are several great things about their brand – they are all natural and clean
If nothing else, it is an interesting read about Squalane and what it is/why our skin needs it.
Sephora has a much bigger list of positive reviews than their actual website if you want to check those out.
SO. What oils or serums do you love and swear by?!
Comment on my latest instagram or comment here – I’d love to hear!!!
I have dark hair, I’m Puerto Rican and I shave my face every once in a while in the shower. I just softly go across my skin with a razor, not firm at all. I’ve been doing this for over year after reading about it on Byrdie or somewhere like that. My hair has not come in dark or like a man’s 5 o’clock shadow, like some people warn, it’s a myth. I’ve been using Hebivore’s Lapis Oil for about a two months and love it. I’ve also read a lot of great things about rode hip oil and La Mer’s facial oil ($$$).
